About the event
From Carly:
I hope you are all doing well, enjoying the fringe season in anticipation of spring to come.
I wanted to invite you all to a birdwatching event with the kids. It will be an opportunity for them to engage as citizen scientists as they conduct an informal survey of local bird life. The data collected is essential for migration studies. The bird variety is abundant right now, especially the ducks!
We will identify, count and record the birds we see. I will bring field guides, regional identification guides**(Simcoe County) and activity sheets. All levels of birding are great- everyone can contribute. The younger students will have lots of opportunity to "find" and "identify" as well with some resources.
I am an Environmental Officer with 15+ years experience in conservation and emergency response. Regular activities within my profession include reducing pollution impacts and managing waste transfer across Ontario. My passion for birding started when I became acutely aware of human impacts on their nesting habits and displacement.
I am involved with both Birds Canada and OFO (Ontario Field Ornithologists). I regularly contribute to Project Feeder Watch and am a lifetime student of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
My goal is to nurture concepts of nature preservation and empower young birders.
Aside from homeschooling my two children, I am usually on a trail, at a marsh or reading about birds. My favourite bird is the AMERICAN CROW.
